3/4  +   2/4  =  5/4 (improper fraction)
                       1 1/4 (mixed number)

3 2/3  +  1 1/7 =
3 14/21  +  1 3/21 =
4 17/21
  • Change the denominators so they are the same.
    • Use Butterfly method, or check to see if one is a factor of the other.)
  • Add fractions, regroup if necessary.
  • Add Whole numbers.
3 1/7  -  1  3/7 =
2 3 {1/7 + (7/7)} "the 1 whole you borrowed" = 2 8/7
2 8/7  -  1 3/7=
1 5/7
  • You cannot subtract 1/7-3/7
  • You borrow 1 whole (7/7) from the 3 and make it a 2
  • You add the original fraction (1/7) to the one you borrowed (7/7) ending up with 8/7.
  • Subtract the fractions.
